Statement by Sheriff Don Horsley Regarding Scott Peterson's Arrival
REDWOOD CITY, CA., Friday, January 23, 2004 - "Scott Peterson
arrived at the Maguire Correctional Facility at approximately 2:27 p.m. on
Friday, January 23, 2004. He was brought into the booking area of the jail by
Stanislaus County deputy sheriffs. Mr. Peterson thanked the transporting
deputies upon their departure. The transporting officers reported that Mr.
Peterson had been cooperative and polite during the journey.
Once in our facility, Scott Peterson was brought into the medical offices where
medical staff examined him. After the exam was completed, Mr. Peterson was taken
to a search room where his clothing was exchanged for jail clothing. Mr.
Peterson will be wearing a dark red shirt and pants to indicate that he is in
protective custody.
Next, one of our classification officers interviewed Mr. Peterson. The purpose
of the classification interview is to determine the special needs, if any, for
persons confined in the jail. Sometimes the interview reveals that the inmate
must be kept separate from another group in the facility. In Mr. Peterson's
case, the interview was to confirm that the housing area that had been
pre-selected was the most appropriate for his housing needs.
From there, Mr. Peterson was taken to his housing area. He will be housed in 3B
West, a special housing unit for protective custody. The correctional officer
and the deputy sheriff assigned to this unit will orient Mr. Peterson on the
rules of the jail, and will give him the opportunity to contact his family. Mr.
Peterson will advise his family of his location and visitation opportunities.
Early next week, we will contact the defense attorneys and the district
attorney, and offer to let them see the Maguire facility."
